Our Distinctives Statement articulates our uniqueness within a large, mainline denomination body of Christ. Yes, we are Presbyterian, Yes, we are an urban congregation. We are also very unique.
As you read our Distinctives Statement. Remember the times that you have seen God work in these ways at FPC. And pray for the coming days and our ability to lean into the identity that God has given us over our life together.
1. Biblically, we uphold Christ. Whether in a Sunday School class like B.A.S.I.C., a program for Youth Ministry, or at a Presbyterian Women’s Gathering, there has always been a singular focus to our preaching and teaching ministry; the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
2. Passionately, we share Christ. Whether it is by drawing people into the ministry of FPC, or sending people across the globe in the name of our Savior, this church has always been committed to spreading light into a sin-darkened world.
3. Historically, we think forward We’re the oldest church in the city, but continue to be a church of “firsts.” This is a church with a rare mix of history and innovation.
4. Strategically, we influence culture. The last line of the historical marker at the Main Street entrance of the South Parking Lot states that FPC is here to furnish leaders to the state and nation. It is a bold statement, but one that is backed by history. We do not say these things with arrogance, but with a humble prayer to steward this unique role well.
5. Intentionally, we care deeply. From the Nehemiah Center to the Shepherd’s Center, to our mission work across the globe — we are a congregation that combines intellect with hands-on work and God has used us in unique and effective ways over the years.
6. Generously, we create solutions. FPC has a long history of “making lemonade.” Every time problems arise, this church has been committed to living on the solution side of the equation.
God has blessed us with a unique role over the years. This isn’t an exclusive or an elitist statement, just an intentional recognition of who we have been over the years.
