Weekly Devotional for September 5

Friends,
In the “Great Commission” (Matthew 28:19-20), Jesus commands his followers to “go and make disciples of all nations.” If you think about it, this command actually carries two directives. The first is obvious; we are to place the highest possible priority on inviting people to become disciples of Jesus and on encouraging and equipping them to grow as disciples. That’s all of us, by the way, not just the “paid Christians” on the church staff.

Living and growing as Christ’s disciples
The second directive, however, is more implied than stated. It carries the assumption that we have made a commitment to living as disciples of Jesus Christ and to growing in our own knowledge and understanding of Christ as our Lord. At the end of the day, it is our own commitment to living and growing as Christ’s disciples that allows the Holy Spirit to transform our lives — and the lives of those around us.

Small things with great love
This fall we are placing a very high priority on encouraging you all to grow and serve as disciples of Jesus Christ. On Sunday mornings we focus on the Gospel according to Matthew, paying special attention to the Sermon on the Mount and the Parables of the Kingdom. The theme of our study will be “Small Things with Great Love: Living as a Disciple of Jesus Christ.”

Grow in your “partnership with God”
On Wednesday nights, in addition to all of our other wonderful offerings, I am teaching a study entitled, “A Disciple’s Journey: The Life of Peter.” Finally, we encourage you to grow in your “partnership with God” by joining a Sunday School class or a small group and by finding a ministry in which to serve, either here on campus, or with one of FPC’s many local and global mission partners.

Your brother in Christ,
Jim Birchfield
